George Dureau: New Orleans Artist comes to The Broad for its NO theatrical debut. The film follows the life and career of George Valentine Dureau (1930-2014). Once recognized as one of New Orleans’ greatest artists, Dureau’s work reflects a New Orleans that no longer exists.
In the 1970’s, Dureau’s French Quarter lifestyle and his work with Black models, amputees, dwarfs, and others underrepresented in contemporary art attracted the attention of rising star Robert Mapplethorpe. But Dureau’s rejection of “photo fame” left him in New Orleans, and following Hurricane Katrina he faded.
