New Orleans-based filmmaking collective DumbSmart Industries is partnering with the Broad Theater to screen three original short films – “Richie Broke,” “Jalapeño Andretti,” and “Joe & Josie” – on Friday March 24th at 7 p.m. with a Cocktail Reception and Surprise Guest DJ to follow at the Theater Bar.
The three short films were written, produced, directed, edited and scored by Nicholas Manuel Pino and Alejandro de los Rios. Teaming up with Pino and de los Rios are a slew of New Orleans best performers including Freeman (Treme, American Horror Story, Queen Sugar) and Matthew Zarba (aka “M@ Peoples”) the Director of Operations at the Upbeat Academy Foundation. Also contributing are KC O’Rourke (Flow Tribe), Andrew Meehan (Gravity A) Manon Pagès (Purgatory Road, Bookie, Atomic Shark), DJ Otto Orellana and dancers from Gris Gris Strut.
“Jalapeño Andretti” is an offbeat comedy about “the Spanish Quarter’s best driver and the fastest man in all of New Orleans” and made its World Premiere in February at the Cinema on the Bayou Film Festival in Lafayette. “Richie Broke” is a dark comedy that follows once-renowned chef Richie Richard (Freeman) as he spirals into a drug- and alcohol-fueled depression following the death of his wife. “Joe & Josie” is a romantic comedy and travel film that chronicles the love story of the titular characters on a surreal and spiritual journey through Vietnam and Thailand.
Tickets for the screening will cost $10 and will be available for pre-order on the Broad Theater’s website. In addition to the three short films, the DumbSmart team will be on hand for a post-screening reception at the Theater’s bar featuring drink specials and a surprise musical guest.
DumbSmart Industries is led by award-winning filmmakers Pino and de los Rios and has quickly cemented itself as one of the fastest growing and innovative New Orleans-based production houses. Part guerilla filmmakers, part auteurs, the DumbSmarts team conceives, produces, films, edits and scores all their films with locally-based crews and artists.
